Heart attacks are usually associated with stress and bad diet, but shyness could also be a factor when it comes to heart disease. People who engage in “social avoidance” are about 40 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke than those who are more outgoing, a study by Chicago’s Northwestern University found. “Many shy people are more reluctant to see their doctor,” says Dr Ronald McCoy, Melbourne-based spokesperson for the Royal College of Australian GPs. “This can mean that it’s harder to detect and prevent health problems.” But you shouldn’t be nervous about seeing your doctor. “Your GP won’t be shocked by anything you say, so it’s always worth having symptoms checked out,” Dr McCoy says. “If you’re nervous, write a list beforehand so you can remember everything you want to discuss.” Even if shyness isn’t an issue, it’s still important to protect against heart disease. “Eating five veg and two fruit a day protects against heart disease,” Dr McCoy says. “You should also stop smoking, drink alcohol in moderation and exercise.” You’re… a worrier
